Prayer is a game changer. Over the past 3.5 years God has been revolutionizing my prayer life. Just like the disciples asked of Jesus in Luke 11:1 after watching Him pray, “Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when He finished one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.'” I have been asking the Lord to teach me to pray. It has been a comforting but also painful process. Many times I have been reminded that I am like Isaiah who said in Isaiah 6:5, “Woe is me! For I am undone; for I am a man of unclean lips…for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.”

Like prayer warriors of old – E.M. Bounds, A.W. Tozer, and George Mueller – I am learning that the more I pray the more I realize how deep my sinfulness is and how deeper still is the grace of God. I will continue to ask God to teach me to pray, to probe and purge my sinful heart, and to renew me by the Holy Spirit. It is only when my heart is clean that I will understand James 5:16 that the prayers of the righteous person accomplish much.
